Drinks well at natural strength; sweet start; pleasant, light fragrant smokiness and a lengthy finish. Smooth, pleasant mouth-feel; with water light acidity, some salt and still the sweeter notes. A complex balance of primary tastes.
This 12 year old is the entry level bottling from the Caol Ila distillery, launched in June of 2002 this expression is light and fresh with that distinctive Caol Ila smoke. in 1846 near Port Askaig, the costly establishment of this remotest of coastal Islay distilleries bankrupted Hector Henderson, its first owner. However, the single malt made in this hidden cove, although never easy to find, was always sought out for its combination of an unmistakable Islay character with sublime drinkability. Typically pale golden and peated, today's Caol Ila remains true to its traditions.
